Presentation:
The Biennale di Venezia's 9th International Architecture Exhibition, METAMORPH, will explore the fundamental changes under way in contemporary architecture, both in the theoretical and practical design field, and in the use of new building technologies. The layout of the METAMORPH exhibition hypothesises the visitor as a witness of these changes which, avoiding the traditional perspectives of interpretation, justify in an increasingly evident manner an open, innovative comparison with the evolution of the living organisms and their capacity for transformation. Architectural space is seen in terms of its capacity to live today's changes; the new materials receive and stress atmospheric effects, and the perception of architecture opens itself to a dynamic conception of time. The IILA has chosen for this Exhibition two examples of two neighboring countries: Costa Rica and Panamá. In these presentations we meet two contemporary positions of countries that have answered their architectural/environmental problems by making an immense laboratory out of the land itself. Such is the case of Frank O. Gehry's Museum of Biodiversity (internal exhibit spaces designed by Bruce Mau). He studied the climate, the cultural characteristics and architectural solutions that develop the surrounding areas creating its own typology, like Bruno Stagno has been doing for some time in Costa Rica.
