Conference by Dr.S.Stanley of Johns Hopkins University

Invited by Panama Bridge of Life, Dr. Steven Stanley, paleobiologist professor at Johns Hopkins University, gave the lecture How the Origin of the Isthmus of Panama Allowed Humans to Evolve in Africa

The lecture was given on the Amador building on July 20th. As commentators it featured Richard G. Cooke, Ph. D. archeologist from STRI and Pastora Franceschi, Engineer Geologist from the Panama Canal Authority.

Dr. Stanley received his Ph.D. in geology from Princeton University. He is currently Professor of Paleobiology in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Stanley has received several honors including the Charles Schubert Award of the Paleontological Society and election into the National Academy of Science and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is author, co-author or editor of numerous works on paleobiology, paleontology and evolution.

Besides four textbooks, his titles include The New Evolutionary Timetable , nominated for the American Book Award; Extinction and Children of the Ice Age: How a Global Catastrophe Allowed Humans to Evolve, of which Douglas Preston wrote in The Los Angeles Times: "Not since Richard Rhodes 'The Making of the Atomic Bomb' have I been so captivated by a nonfiction book"

Dr. Stanley is a pro bono advisor for the scientific script of the Museum's exhibit "Building the Bridge".
